Road tax and P11D company car benefits are based on CO2 emission.
As you probably know, CO2 readings have been inaccurate on VW cars. So some clients have asked me whether they will receive a surprise tax bill based on new CO2 numbers.
Fortunately, HMRC have confirmed that they are not going to restate any CO2 emissions for VW cars for years before either for road tax or for tax that arises on P11D company car benefits.
However, we don’t at this stage know what HMRC will do regarding future years if the vehicle certification agencies change the official CO2 figures for VW cars.
