How long do you spend every month looking at your numbers?

I had a really lovely dessert today. It was vanilla ice cream with a sprinkle collection of decaf coffee beans, hazel nuts and dark chocolate in a blender that I sprinkled on the ice cream and then topped it off with Canadian maple syrup. It was so good that I ate too much and actually had physical stomach pain as I got up from the table (I had just cooked a roast beef as well).
I stumbled into the lounge, read my son a few ‘Thomas and Friends’ stories (Cranky, Bulgy, Jack), put him to bed, sang him a song I just created about a centipede and then crashed into my reading chair with a cup of rooibos and whipped out my March management accounts and my sales and marketing report and spent the next two hours……..
reading and thinking.
I love looking at the numbers in my business. Just taking some time out to really study the numbers gives me so many ideas of how to make the business better. One of the best thing about the numbers is that it dispels the myths that can build up around certain aspects of the business and can test our assumptions of what really is happening. Having the black and white numbers (or in our case, blue and green), can dilute arguments and in some cases can really show up the team members who really know what’s going on and the ones that don’t.
Clearly I am an accountant and enjoy this stuff, but the challenge to any business owner is how much time do you spend looking at your numbers? If you don’t enjoy it or don’t understand, does your accountant help explain it to you. Do you know the key numbers in the business that can really drive growth?
If you are challenged on getting the numbers you need, give me a call on 0113 394 4616. I can help you understand what is going on in your business (ice cream dessert not supplied).
